The brown beech (18th century)

brown beech

The brown beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Atropunicea') in the Bruul Park is believed to be a relic of the eighteenth-century landscaping of the Spaniard's Castle. The beech stood here in the company of a horse chestnut and a notable swamp cypress, but these were felled in 1958.

In 1992, the brown beech was protected as a monument with the motivation: "because of the general interest formed by the historical value of the perspective on the monumental Saint Hermes Basilica, enhanced by the large image-defining beech with symmetrically built-up crown on the forecourt".
